CSA Adventure – Cream Peas August 30, 2010

Filed under: Recipes — frugallygreenmom @ 6:46 pm

One of the reasons I wanted to join a CSA was so that I would be forced to try new foods.  Well, in my first week I was able to do that!

One of the things we received was a bag of cream peas.  I’m glad they told us what they were, because I would have had no idea otherwise.  They look a lot like black-eyed peas without the eye.  Since I had never heard of them, I turned to the trusty internet to figure out what to do with them.  It took a lot of searching, but I finally managed to find an informative post on them that has a great recipe for cooking them.

It turns out that you have to cook them for almost an hour, even though they are fresh peas.  I would have never guessed!  I’m cooking them up right now, along with some carrots, a jalapeno, and some spices.  I plan on doing some interesting things with them since I’m not a huge fan of plain old peas.  More on that later!

I have wanted to do this as well, but they one I found way way too expensive for my budget.

    • They can definitely be pricey – I split mine with someone in our neighborhood. We also like to designate a certain amount of money to go back into our local community each year, so this is a way to do that.
