Heart of Haiti – A Company with Heart

Filed under: Uncategorized — frugallygreenmom @ 5:01 pm

When I choose what to buy, it makes me happy when I can find a company that makes a difference.  Willa Shalit, the founder of Fair Winds Trading, has made that easy for us.  In partnership with Macy’s and BrandAid Haiti, she is letting us support Haitian artisans who transform unlikely materials into extraordinary art.  The Heart of Haiti collection not only allows you to purchase some amazing artwork, but the proceeds help provide better healthcare, nutrition, and improved education for the citizens of Haiti.

Just one short year ago a devastating earthquake rocked Haiti, bringing this already poor country to it’s knees.  Through this unique program, artisans receive 22 % of the retail price for each item in the collection.  This gives them a steady income, allowing them to start piecing their lives together again.

You can meet the artists here.  Most have been creating artwork for over 20 years, and you can really tell by the quality of the workmanship!

If you’re looking for a gift that makes a difference be sure to check it out!

I was selected for this very special “CleverHaiti” opportunity by Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity. All opinions are my own.

Win a Keller Williams CD! December 22, 2010

As the mother of a toddler, I’m always looking for music that makes both of us happy.  So one thing that I have learned to do is keep my eye out for artists I like who make a children’s CD.  That’s why I was thrilled to learn that Keller Williams had come out with a children’s CD.  I love the quirky humor that is in his songs, and I just knew that would translate well into children’s music.

A true original, Keller Williams has already won the hearts and imaginations of a seething tide of young adults who are musically “in the know.” With Kids, Keller creates a style of family music that’s all his own, taking influences ranging from traditional bluegrass and rock to Robin Williams and Bobby McFerrin, and transporting them to warp level.

EVERYONE can get a free download of Car Seat at Keller William’s website here.
You can buy the album at his store here (he has a lot of great specials going on right now), or from Amazon here – Kids.

Chocolate – A Perfect Holiday Gift! December 1, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — frugallygreenmom @ 6:35 pm

With the holidays approaching there will be an increasing flurry of activity leading up to the big day. Organizing gifts, party schedules and planning your own celebration will be hectic enough, so why not make celebrations sweeter? According to the National Confectioners Association, the winter holidays represent the biggest boxed chocolate gifting season with more than 70 percent of adults giving or receiving a box of chocolates! Hershey’s Pot of Gold Truffles Sampler and Premium Collection gift boxes are perfect for last minute hostess gifts, unexpected holiday guests, and delicious stocking stuffers.

Chocolate is a great gift for almost anyone!  The majority of people in this world love chocolate, and it isn’t a gift that is going to be sitting around forever taking up space.  I personally like to take chocolate as a hostess gift – they can choose to serve it to guests or save it for a snack for themselves later!  It takes no immediate attention, which is perfect for a busy hostess!  Hershey’s has a great selection of chocolates that will satisfy almost any taste!

Who will you be sharing chocolate with this holiday season?

I am entering a contest for a Hershey’s Pot of Gold prize pack as a member of the Mom Bloggers Club.

CSA Adventures – Falafel (Recipe Included) October 18, 2010

As I was trying to think of things to do with the cream peas I got in my CSA box, I realized that their taste and texture weren’t too far away from garbanzo beans.  Of course!  I’ll make falafels with them!

The falafels turned out great – I hate that I forgot to take a picture of them.  I had them on Greek pita bread with lettuce, feta, and yogurt.  I also used them to top a spinach salad.

  • 4 cups cream peas (or chickpeas), cooked and drained
  • ½-1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • ½ small red onion, finely chopped

  1. Put first 7 ingredients in food processor (start with ½ cup breadcrumbs) and process until almost smooth.
  2. Add the onion and process slightly more, just to combine.
  3. Stir in more breadcrumbs as needed to get a sturdy consistency.
  4. Shape (1/2 inch thick) patties and bake in a 400 F oven for 30 minutes, flipping over after 15 minutes.

I hope you enjoy this recipe – it’s easy, inexpensive, healthy, and tasty!

Frugal Family Activity for this Weekend – Greek Festival October 15, 2010

Looking for something fun for the whole family to do this weekend?  On a budget?  You’ve come to the right place!

The Greek Festival is celebrating it’s 100th Anniversary this weekend.  The Pensacola Greek Festival is one the area’s most popular outdoor festivals. This 3 day cultural event provides an opportunity for the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church to share their culture and faith with the Pensacola community.  It’s free to go hang out and watch all of the singing and dancing under the big tent.  Food is available, and all of it is reasonably priced (nothing over $10).  You can get the menu (with prices), activity schedule, and more here.  Be prepared to walk a little to get to the festival and don’t arrive hungry – the lines for food are huge, and you may be waiting in line for close to an hour.

Children are sure to enjoy the songs and dancing that is almost always going on under the big tent.  Crowd participation is encouraged!
